One of the things that I have recently learned from a well known physician is that there is a lot more to post partum depression than just depression. Up to 50% of women with PPD actually have bipolar physiology. Whats interesting to me is that so many people talk about depression but bipolar is still one of those "keep it in the closet" subjects. 50% of people with bipolar disorder attempt suicide and 20% actually complete it. Pretty big numbers. Also, the typical drugs used to treat a person with unipolar depression (i.e. SSRIs like Prozac, Zoloft) can throw a misdiagnosed bipolar person into a full blown manic state.
