Hmmm, I hate to see the words "fail" and "mother" in the same sentence. Mothers need to know that bonding is not a one-shot process. It goes on as long as the mother and child live; there is not cut off date after which mothers are described as failures.
A great book on bonding is THE SCIENTIFICATION OF LOVE. It's by Michele O'Dent, the father of U.S. waterbirth. He's a French OB/GYN who wrote a sort of meta-analysis of bonding theory. Wonderful.
Another interesting book on Jane Honikman's uncle is LOVE AT GOON PARK. Harry Harlow pioneered our understanding of bonding. Great read and good insight on how PSI came to be… Jane was surely shaped by her famous Uncle Harry.
