I'm honored that John McManamy selected me as his Internet Mental Health Hero of 2009. Wow. That's just so cool. Here's what he wrote:
Katherine’s blog Postpartum Progress is a must-read on a normal day. In May, she outdid herself with a Mother’s Day Rally for Moms' Mental Health, featuring an all-star line-up of “warrior mother” guest bloggers whose contributions cast a bright light on a dimly-lit area of mental illness.
Soon after, in July, Katherine publicly scolded the editors of Time Magazine “for allowing an article on a topic that they clearly knew so little about to be published,” then rallied fellow advocates and experts in a letter to Time. Of all things, in its Person of the Year issue, Time singled out Katherine’s letter as one of its “Letters of the Year” of 2009.
Well. He sure makes me sound good, doesn't he?Click here to see John's other mental health superhero selections.
The Superman picture on his post got me to thinking … If you were a mental health superhero, what would your superhero outfit be? What superpowers would you have?
I'd like a stigma eraser,an insurance company vaporizer, and some kind of microscopic electro-vision that would allowme to see into the brain and figure out exactly what causes postpartum depression.
Katherine,
You are indeed a superhero! Congrats on the recognition by Time for one of their 2009 Letters of the Year! I don't understand, though, how they can recognize your letter and yet not publish it ever? I don't think that was ever done, right? Well, they should have! It was an awesome letter!
I wish I had the very same superhuman powers you long to have, though I also long to have the power to bring an awareness of perinatal mood disorders worldwide with a mere blink (like genie)!
All the best for 2010!
Ivy
Funny question- I'd wear a pink or purple super suit with PPA on the front- meaning post-partum avenger!
Katherine! Ok, did I MISS something, or did you not mention before today that Time picked your letter as a letter of the year? Heck YES! I've got goosebumps I'm just so excited for you, for the fact that you have been recognized for being willing to put your story out there, shatter stigmas, and be such an incredible advocate for women suffering from postpartum mood disorders. You rock.
