Here’s a link to Leigh Ann Simmons’ blog Women’s Health Matters — she writes about a new study indicating that talk therapy works to treat postpartum depression. I think talking it out, whether in therapy or in a support group, is a key part of recovery and for some people may work to treat the illness without meds.

I can't believe I'm just discovering your blog! I have long been amazed by how shoddy postpartum care is in general in the United States. So many women are completely unsupported during (and not adequately informed about!) the period between the third or fourth day, and the six-week visit…and that includes both physical changes, emotional needs and possible mental health issues. I plan on adding a "postpartum resources" section to my website soon (it's currently under construction) and will definitely link to you.
Thanks for posing this. Many women with PPD do know that something is wrong, but they feel that nothing can be done about it. Or they are worried that they cannot take medications because they are breastfeeding. But therapy is a very useful and effective option for women suffering from PPD.

I recovered both times with talk therapy. I have a prescription in my wallet at all times but I've never filled it. When I feel a wave coming on, I'm right back in therapy.
