This is a good article by Angela Pandolfo Roy about her postpartum experience. She raises an excellent question, one that many of us ask:
"… why, in the hospital, could I avail myself of the services of a lactation consultant but not of a mental health professional to discuss PPD? Why did my OB/GYN stop by my room every day to check my Cesarean stitches but not my state of mind? During my pregnancy, my husband and I had to take six birthing and parenting classes in which we practiced putting on diapers and installing car seats but did not discuss maternal care options."
that's so true. I was in the same hospital with the same doctors and nurses who had dealt with me the first time, and no one did anything, no one listened or cared when I cried as I tried to nurse. They blew it off as just baby blues.
Sigh.
I agree totally! It's so sad that so many women are suffering/have suffered without any warnings prior to delivery that this could be a possibility. I suffered from PPD and the dr's couldn't care less…I also was dismissed as a patient with the baby blues. It wasn't until I located a dr that specialized in PPD that I was actually taken seriously. I was in such bad shape that I had to be rehospitalized. Dr's of the world…get educated and then educate the future mothers so they don't have to suffer like I, and so many others, have!
