I'm so sorry to report that anew tragedy has occurred in Texas in the case of Narjes Modarresi. I'm not going toshare the details here for fear of scaring my readers who are suffering, but for those of you who aren't you can read more at the Houston Chronicle website. Apparently Modarresi had a previous diagnosis of bipolar disorder, which as you know is a risk factor for postpartum psychosis.
Anyway, here's a link to Susan Stone's blog where she reports that the case will be handled by the amazing lawyer George Parnham, who represented Andrea Yates. George is a wonderful man who truly cares about women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
I have been thinking about this one alot and can't for the life of me figure out why this mom who was: previously diagnosed with bipolar (a risk factor for postpartum psychosis), prescribed an antipsychotic medication and had a previous record of being hospitalized after the birth of her 1st child would not be supervised.
Especially being in Texas (home to too many postpartum psychosis tragedies) one would think that such factors would immediately tip off everyone that this combination was a dangerous one. I can't help but wonder if this is a case of ignorance on the part of doctors who failed to stress to the family the need for this woman to be supervised 24/7.
When will we wake up and realize that lives will continue to be lost until and unless we take our heads out of the sand?
I know! You have to wonder why there
weren't people looking out for her more
closely. I just think people still don't
understand that postpartum psychosis is REALLY
serious and that these mothers really need
serious support and monitoring.
