The American Psychological Association website has a helpfularticle describing what happens if you or someone you love calls 911 if you are having suicidal thoughts. The author, Dr. Stephanie Smith, explains:
"What I have realized over the years, is that often people are afraid to call 911 or go to the hospital (even when they really need to) because they don’t know what to expect. They are afraid they will be looked down on, chained to a bed, or made to feel “stupid” or “weak.” In fact, seeking immediate medical and psychological treatment is the most important thing you can do for yourself, and for most people is a positive, and helpful experience."
She goes on to explain the process should you need to call 911. Great piece!
Greetings,
I am writing to follow-up regarding the survey about your blog that you
completed approximately six weeks ago. That survey was the first of two
surveys. I am writing about the second and final survey.
I greatly appreciate your participation in the initial survey, and hope that you
will participate in the second (and final) survey. The second survey is shorter
and should take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey
we explain in detail the goals of the project. The second survey can be found
at the following link: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s/324062/bloggingii
If you have any questions about the second survey or the project more generally,
please let me know.
Thanks for your consideration.

This was a GREAT post! There's so much power in awareness. I'm a hospital social worker, and this is one type of situation I deal with, and I can say this is a very accurate example of how the process works.
Thank you so much for sharing this article. I suffer from clinical depression and I have also been diagnosed with other disorders. There has been more than one occasion where I have had these scary thoughts. I often wonder who is the best person to call, and sometimes I feel like I have no one. It’s so difficult to think clearly when I’m in this state, and it has always scared me to make any phone call. This article has officially helped me to plan ahead for keeping myself safe the next time I feel that I might be in this kind of danger. Thank you again!
